A: Dessicated thyroid is only available by prescription in the U.S. These preparations contain both T4 and T3 thyroid hormones. Supplements that contain glandular thyroid are required to be thyroxin (T4) free. Pure Encapsulations does not carry glandular thyroid extract. We suggest that individuals add a high potency multivitamin such as Nutrient 950 or UltraNutrient to any thyroid support protocol. Nutrients--including copper, zinc and selenium--are crucial for production of thyroid hormones and for the conversion of T4 to T3. Iodine is also important for the production of thyroid hormones. However, Pure Encapsulations Iodine and Iodine with Tyrosine are best suited for individuals with a determined iodine deficiency. High amounts (several milligrams per day) of iodine can actually interfere with normal thyroid function and should not be taken without consulting a doctor.
