We are often asked to clarify the breakdown of our buffered ascorbic acid products. Below is a description of both the encapsulated and powder supplements.
Buffered Ascorbic Acid Capsules
This formula is buffered with mineral ascorbates to create a neutral pH vitamin C. This may lessen the possibility of gastric irritation in sensitive individuals. In each capsule, 1,000 mg of buffered C provides 511 mg l-ascorbic acid. The remaining content is made up of mineral buffers (which are calcium, magnesium and potassium) and crystalline water.
These are "reacted" with each other in that calcium is bound to ascorbate, magnesium is bound to ascorbate, and potassium is bound to ascorbate. Technically, they may not be "fully-reacted" since the definition of fully reacted typically refers to a specific molar ratio. For example, a "fully-reacted" form of calcium ascorbate would be 9.4% calcium to 82% ascorbate.

Buffered Ascorbic Acid Powder
The powder provides the same ratio of mineral buffers to ascorbates, but in the powder, calcium is not bound to ascorbate, magnesium is not bound to ascorbate, and potassium is not bound to ascorbate. Once water is added, the buffers combine with the ascorbate acids, releasing carbon dioxide (bubbles) and water.
