Sorting out Mushroom extracts

A common question we are asked involves the differences between our various mushroom extracts. For the most part, the differences involve slight variations in beta-d-glucan concentration, current applications and/or traditional use.

Pure Encapsulations Maitake Mushroom is a 4:1 extract providing about 3% beta glucan. Maitake has demonstrated the potential to support immune function, cellular health, cardiovascular function, and healthy glucose and lipid metabolism. (1-4). Traditionally, maitake was used as a tonic and adaptogen and for promoting wellness and vitality (13). *

Maitake D-Fraction® is a specialized extract of maitake standardized to contain 30% D-fraction. At a 1995 symposium in Tampa, FL, clinical reports involving 165 subjects in Japan were presented. Results suggested that Maitake D-fraction may provide high potential support for the liver, lung, breast and brain. A clinical trial evaluating Maitake D-fraction for breast and prostate health is currently underway (11).*

Reishi mushroom extract contains approximately 10% beta glucan. Similar to maitake, preliminary studies suggest that reishi has been positively associated with cardiovascular health and immune support (5-7). Recent studies indicate that reishi may support healthy cellular function for the breast and prostate (8). Reishi may also play a hepatoprotective role, attributed in part to its superoxide scavenging ability (9, 10). Traditional uses of reishi include support for general fatigue and weakness (13).*

Shiitake is composed of about 4-5% beta glucan and a unique polysaccharide known as lentinan. Studies using high dose lentinan preparations report promising immune and liver support potential (12). For thousands of years, shiitake was used by various cultures for immune support and to increase energy (13).*

Pure Encapsulations mushroom extracts include: Maitake Mushroom extract, Maitake D-Fraction, Reishi mushroom extract, Shiitake Mushroom extract and
M/R/S Mushroom Formula, a combination of maitake, reishi and shiitake for broad spectrum support.
