FDA Concludes that Chromium Picolinate
is Safe;
Approves First Qualified Health Claim
In August, the FDA recognized chromium picolinate as a safe
nutritional supplement with credible evidence to support the
first qualified health claim with regard to the role of chromium
in healthy glucose metabolism.*
With regards to safety, the FDA made the following statement:
"FDA concludes at this time, under the preliminary requirements
of 21 CFR 101.14(b)(3)(ii), that the use of chromium picolinate
in dietary supplements as described in the [approved] qualified
health claims discussed in section IV is safe and lawful under
the applicable provisions Act."
Health claims are specific statements that describe a relationship
between a food, food component, or dietary supplement ingredient
and their ability to reduce the risk of a disease or health-related
condition. "Qualified health claims" provide the
FDA with the ability to add a disclaimer to a potential health
claim if it feels the evidence does not meet the standard
of "significant scientific agreement."
The qualified health claim for chromium picolinate approved
by the FDA reads as follows:
"One small study suggests that chromium picolinate may
reduce the risk of insulin resistance, and therefore possibly
may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. FDA concludes, however,
that the existence of such a relationship between chromium
picolinate and either insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
is highly uncertain."
The near future is likely to reveal more positive news about
the role of chromium picolinate, as additional peer-reviewed
studies are on track to be published in upcoming months.
The study cited by the FDA was conducted at the Pennington
BioMedical Research Center, Louisiana State University System,
where lead scientists suggest that 200-1,000 mcg of chromium
as chromium picolinate plays an important role in healthy
carbohydrate metabolism.*
