Quick Fact

-Vitamin D3: Source and Form

Quick Fact – Vitamin D3: Source and Form

Pure Encapsulations vitamin D3, cholecalciferol, is derived from lanolin. Cholecalciferol is a naturally occurring form of vitamin D in humans. Research indicates that plant-derived ergocalciferol, vitamin D2, is metabolized differently than vitamin D3. It is not a naturally occurring form of vitamin D in humans. In addition, vitamin D3 may be more potent and active for a longer duration of time.*

Dietary sources of vitamin D include certain fatty fish (360 i.u. per 3.5 oz.), fortified milk (100 i.u. per 8 oz.) and eggs (25 i.u.) from hens that have been fed vitamin D. The majority of vitamin D is derived from sun exposure, which converts provitamin D3 in the skin through a multi-step process to vitamin D3. Because there are few natural dietary sources of vitamin D, lanolin is one of the most common sources for supplemental vitamin D3.*
