Q: What is the difference between tocopherols and tocotrienols in vitamin E?
A: Vitamin E refers to eight different forms, including alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherols and alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienols. While the forms have similar actions, recent research reveals some differences. Alpha-tocopherol is the most biologically active form of vitamin E. It is a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger, supporting cell membrane integrity and tissue health. Gamma-tocopherol is the form found most in foods. Research indicates that this form may be particularly supportive for cardiovascular health and prostate cell health. Additionally, gamma-tocopherol, beta-tocopherol and delta-tocopherol support healthy platelet function. Studies suggest that tocotrienols support vascular health and healthy lipid metabolism, at least in part by maintaining healthy enzyme activity.*
