Q: How is ubiquinol different from CoQ10?
A: Traditionally, supplemental CoQ10 has been available in the oxidized form known as ubiquinone. New manufacturing capabilities have recently been developed stabilizing ubiquinol (the reduced form) and allowing it to be available in supplement form. In the body, mitochondria must convert ubiquinone to ubiquinol through the addition of two hydrogen atoms. Ubiquinol is the active antioxidant form of CoQ10 and the majority of CoQ10 found in the plasma of healthy young subjects is in this form. Furthermore, research suggests that it may be more readily absorbed than the ubiquinone form, particularly for some individuals who appear not to respond to regular CoQ10 supplementation (possibly due to poor conversion of CoQ10 to ubiquinol in the body).
